Happy 10th anniversary to HATCHET 2! On October 1, 2010 HATCHET 2 made history twice in the same weekend. First – when it became the first horror film in over 30 years to be released in major US multiplexes without an MPAA rating…and then again just 48 hours later when it became the first horror film to ever be pulled from every screen during its opening weekend.
The cuts that the MPAA were demanding in order to secure an acceptable “R” rating (down from an “NC-17”) included cutting out 27 of the 30 hatchet strikes to “Chad’s” (David Foy’s) face and a long list of other edits to virtually every death scene in the film that would have not only fully censored the film that we made but completely changed the tone of the film from ridiculous and fun to realistic and mean spirited. In 2010 “torture porn” films distributed by major studios were A-OK but slashers with undead swamp monsters killing comedians in Monty Python-esque ways with a gas powered belt sander were a big No-No. Check out the documentary THIS FILM IS NOT YET RATED- to learn more about the MPAA and their rating process.
While they may have knocked Victor Crowley down that weekend…10 years, 2 more sequels, Halloween masks, action figures, and a comic book series later… they couldn’t actually hurt him. The bayou butcher’s work is never finished, he can’t be stopped, and we have a feeling we’ll be seeing him again someday.
Join Adam Green, Kane Hodder, Danielle Harris, and Parry Shen TONIGHT for an on-line screening and LIVE Q&A celebrating HATCHET 2’s 10th Anniversary at 8:30pm PST as part of this year’s Mile High Horror Film Festival. Click here for details and ticket information.
If you’re going to watch the film on your own to celebrate- make sure you are watching the UNRATED version and the film that we actually made. (Unfortunately the versions of the HATCHET films that are currently streaming on Amazon Prime are the censored versions.) We recommend getting an autographed UNRATED Blu-Ray from our BUY STUFF store here.
