THE MOVIE CRYPT podcast’s 4th annual “Yorkiethon” took place over the weekend of December 13th through 15th with hosts Adam Green, Joe Lynch, and Arwen performing a 48-hour LIVE podcast variety show to benefit Save A Yorkie Rescue. The hosts were joined by special guests non-stop, around the clock for 2 days straight performing live comedy, music, film commentaries, script readings, interviews, and more… all to raise money for abandoned, sick, and abused dogs. Highlights included the incredible live reading of NIGHT SKIES (two time Oscar nominated screenwriter John Sayles’ never produced screenplay that was intended to be Steven Spielberg’s follow up to CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND) and the surprise screening of Adam Green’s very first feature film COFEE & DONUTS (the never publicly released film that would go on to become the sit-com HOLLISTON) just to name a couple. With 67 guests (!!!) and twice as many items in Arwen’s Silent Auction than any previous year, “Yorkiethon 4” was the most ambitious live marathon that Green, Lynch, and Arwen have ever put on.
The result? A record breaking $40,000.00 raised for Save A Yorkie Rescue!
“Yorkiethon 4” began with hosts Adam Green, Joe Lynch, and Arwen welcoming the audience to their 4th annual 48-hour marathon, teasing a few of the guests/events to come over the next two days, and explaining the two different ways to donate: a GoFundMe page and Arwen’s Silent Auction. While Arwen may be the least vocal of the three hosts, it is no secret that the tiny canine’s Silent Auction makes her the true unsung hero of each year’s fund raising effort. This year, Arwen’s collection of donated items (which included Slash’s top hat, a guest spot on comedian Doug Benson’s show DOUG LOVES MOVIES, and IMPRACTICAL JOKERS’ star Brian “Q” Quinn’s screen-worn jacket just to name a few) brought in over $26,000.00 – more than half of the total raised for her fellow Yorkshire Terriers in need! Of course, no “Yorkiethon” kick off would be complete without hearing directly from Save A Yorkie Rescue. The hosts called the rescue’s president Tiffany Renninger on the east coast and she welcomed listeners to this year’s marathon. Tiffany detailed several of the non-profit organization’s most challenging rescues of the past year, reminding the hosts and their audience exactly who they are doing it all for. And with that, “Yorkiethon 4” was off and running!

Musician Jason Charles Miller (a “Yorkiethon” staple having performed on every marathon thus far) started it all off with an extremely powerful live performance that included the world premiere of his newest song “Never Turning Back.” Filmmaker Fred Dekker (MONSTER SQUAD) sat down with the guys next. Since Lynch had been out of the country filming when Dekker recorded his episode of THE MOVIE CRYPT podcast back in 2016, he was especially excited to finally get the chance to interview one of his biggest filming heroes. One of the biggest laughs came when Lynch chastised Green for forgetting to ask Dekker about RICOCHET during his original interview. When Lynch prompted Dekker for stories about the making of the film Dekker quickly answered, “you know, I don’t really have any stories about that one.” Right at the end of the conversation with Fred Dekker, FX artist Dean Gates (MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE) happened to stop by just to wish the guys luck. Turns out, Gates and Dekker had lots of friends and associates in common proving as always that Hollywood is a much smaller town than it seems! The marathon continued on with Taj Jackson (3T) who candidly shared the various triumphs and hardships he has persevered through in his life and career including the massive success of 3T’s first record “Brotherhood” (3 million albums sold) happening for the three brothers while simultaneously enduring the murder of their dear mother Dee Dee Jackson. Taj’s inspirational message of always remaining optimistic and refusing to let hard times disenchant him couldn’t have been more fitting for THE MOVIE CRYPT’s annual “Yorkiethon” charity fundraiser. Horror icon Danielle Harris (the HALLOWEEN and HATCHET franchises) was next up, sharing her experience working with Quentin Tarantino on ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD. Having been the very first guest to ever appear on THE MOVIE CRYPT podcast (Episode 2 – May 13, 2013) and given her many collaborations with Green over the last decade, Danielle is always a huge hit with the podcast’s audience. The opening night of “Yorkiethon 4” was rounded out by a live commentary for ABATTOIR with director Darren Lynn Bousman (SAW 2-4) and stars Jessica Lowndes (90210) and Dayton Callie (SONS OF ANARCHY) providing Green and Lynch with stories from the making of the 2016 horror/thriller. Bousman and Callie’s ball busting repertoire with each other combined with Lowndes’ sincere and humble sweetness made for a terrific first commentary of the marathon. The entire group’s impromptu performance of “Suddenly Seymour” from LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS was certainly an unexpected highlight from the live ABATTOIR commentary!

As Friday night became Saturday morning, filmmaker Don Coscarelli (PHANTASM) stopped by in the midnight hour to personally deliver several autographed items for Arwen’s Silent Auction and show Green and Lynch one of the brand new PHANTASM “Sphere Collection” box sets – which they could hardly contain their fanboy excitement over. Coscarelli was immediately followed by comedian Brian Posehn (THE SARAH SILVERMAN PROGRAM), marking his first ever appearance on THE MOVIE CRYPT. The fact that Posehn made a middle of the night appearance on “Yorkiethon 4” despite the fact that he was flying out of Los Angeles just 3 hours later was not lost on the hosts or the audience, although after his recent guest starring role on THE MANDALORIAN it’s not like Green and Lynch weren’t already beyond impressed with their friend.

As Posehn bid the boys farewell a live commentary for LAST ACTION HERO (1993) began. The commentary was arguably one of the funniest segments of the entire marathon as “Arnold Schwarzenegger” (Richard Trejo) sat down to discuss the film with Green and Lynch. An unexpected visit by Lynch’s alter ego “Abel Ferrara” (a character Lynch only brings out during annual “Yorkiethons”) turned the commentary into a hilarious argument between “Arnold” and “Abel” that fans in the live chat would still be reeling from almost 2 days later. LAST ACTION HERO was followed by author and screenwriter Joe Knetter (BLIND) who read one of his original short stories and then joined Green and Lynch in a tribute to their beloved friend, the late Sid Haig (THE DEVIL’S REJECTS). After that, FX artist Robert Pendergraft (the HATCHET series) taught Adam and Joe how to create realistic burns on their skin using nothing but gelatin, powder, and simple make-up that can be found in your local supermarket.

As the sun began to rise in Los Angeles, producer Sarah Elbert (HOLLISTON) shared her talents as a Reiki master, certified crystal healer, and tarot card reader to give personalized tarot card readers to three listeners. (We immediately heard back from one of those listeners just how accurate Sarah’s reading actually was and how touched they were by her reading!) Sculptor, production designer, model maker, director – and about 35 other titles he’s held in Hollywood over his distinguished career – Greg Aronowitz (THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK) shared a few pieces from his collection of original STAR WARS concept art that blew the nerdy minds of the small crowd that had gathered in the ArieScope studio. Over the years, Greg has collected enough art, props, and FX pieces to create a Hollywood Museum- and that’s exactly what he’s done (if you’re lucky enough to see it)! Up next were actress Claudia Christian (BABYLON 5) and filmmaker Adam Rifkin (DETROIT ROCK CITY) who have worked together several times over the years. The two gave incredibly candid advice about surviving the harshness of the industry while encouraging aspiring artists not to give up or let rejection break their spirit. The response to their conversation in the marathon’s live chat was overwhelming! Two of “Yorkiethons” favorite alumni Dave Parker (THE HILLS RUN RED) and Mike Mendez (BIG ASS SPIDER) sat down with Adam and Joe to perform a hilarious and humble commentary to their hit anthology TALES OF HALLOWEEN. As a bonus surprise, filmmaker Axelle Carolyn walked in and joined them right as her segment of the film was starting! But the surprises didn’t end there as what the audience didn’t see was KROQ FM’s Kat Corbett (a friend of the hosts and a former MOVIE CRYPT guest) pull Green, Lynch, and Arwen into the ArieScope courtyard to conduct an interview with them and help spread the word about their annual “Yorkiethons.” The 3 hosts were already on hour 18 of the marathon and looking rather frazzled but thanks to people like Kat (a huge animal lover and dog rescuer herself) taking it upon herself to use her platform on the radio to spread the word when something good is happening… even more dogs will be saved next year! Green and Lynch may have missed a bunch of the TALES commentary but if there’s one thing they could count on Parker, Mendez, and Carolyn to do it was hold their own and according to the audience response – they killed it. After that, FX artist Jennifer Aspinall (MAD TV) sat down to tell the guys about some of the biggest make-up challenges she’s faced over her long career spanning 4 decades. Aspinall also talked about her birds prompting Green to share the story of his parakeet “She-ra the masturbating bird.” Its a story he should likely keep to himself in the future, but then again, She-ra’s habit kept him (yes, him) alive for almost 3 times the lifespan of the average budgie! Who knows? Maybe when more budgies learn about She-ra’s self love it will change the lifespan for parakeets around the world? Or maybe not. The next thing Green and Lynch knew, cinema’s most famous Christmas bully “Scut Farkus” was standing before them with yellow eyes (“so help me God, yellow eyes!”) and making them say “Uncle!” Thankfully actor Zack Ward (A CHRISTMAS STORY) is nothing like the infamous character he played as a child and that we all watch for 24 hours straight every Christmas. Ward spoke at length about directing his upcoming movie PATSY LEE & THE KEEPERS OF THE 5 KINGDOMS which he recently wrapped production on. The images he shared with Green and Lynch showcasing the use of practical FX/prosthetics to transform actors into animal-like characters in his fantasy adventure movie were enough to move Ward’s film to the top of their “most anticipated films” list for 2020! Up next on the marathon was guitar prodigy Herman Li (DRAGONFORCE) who brought his own rescue dogs “Sinbad” and “Pickles” with him. (“Sinbad” is completely blind while “Pickles” has only one eye – and the entire studio instantly fell in love with both of them.)

Li was kind enough to wow the audience with his unbelievable guitar playing talent and his segment of the marathon was most certainly one of the weekend’s greatest moments! He even donated a pair of VIP passes good for any DRAGONFORCE show on their world tour! Up next was the 4th (and most star-studded) live film commentary of the weekend as Joe Lynch put his director hat on and lead cast members Aleksa Palladino (THE IRISHMAN), Matthew Currie Holmes (THE FOG), Daniella Alonso (PAUL BLART: MALL COP 2), Steve Braun (HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE), and Crystal Lowe (INSOMNIA) down memory lane for WRONG TURN 2: DEAD END. Given that it had been over 13 years since the group was last all together, the reunion made for one of the most enjoyable commentaries of the entire marathon and the stories from the making of the film came fast and furious from the body splitting start until the gory meat grinding finish!

After that, musician/composer Brendon Small (METALOCALYPSE) sat down to chat with the hosts about all he’s been up to since the very first “Yorkiethon” 4 years ago. Screenwriter Josh Stolberg (JIGSAW) was next up making his first ever appearance on THE MOVIE CRYPT podcast. The conversation weaved through Stolberg’s long career, highlighting the various hurdles and industry changes the filmmaker has endured and overcome. Pizzas were delivered and old fashions were made as the cast of the marathon’s centerpiece event quietly took their places around the ArieScope studio in the background…

This year’s live script reading was of John Sayles never produced screenplay NIGHT SKIES- the movie that Steven Spielberg had originally developed and planned on making as a sequel to CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND before choosing to make E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL instead. Director Dave Parker (who had already appeared on the marathon for the TALES OF HALLOWEEN commentary 10 hours earlier in the day) assembled an incredible cast and somehow raised the bar yet again on the “Yorkiethon” live script readings. For last year’s “Yorkiethon 3,” Parker had directed the live reading of Mick Garris’ draft of George Romero’s never produced screenplay for THE MUMMY and stolen the show. With his carefully handpicked cast and select moments of added score (a “Yorkiethon” first!) mixed with the cast members’ live sound effects, NIGHT SKIES was an absolute joy to listen to and played out like a vintage radio play. Cast members included Tiffany Shepis (VICTOR CROWLEY), Todd Farmer (JASON X), Austin Falk (TALES OF HALLOWEEN), Jeffrey Reddick (FINAL DESTINATION), Matt Mercer (DEMENTIA PART 2), Suzanne Voss (LORDS OF SALEM), Jared Rivet (ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK), Buz Wallick (TWINSANITY), Mary O’Neil (PSYCHO GRANNY), and Darin Heames (DR. GIGGLES). To call the reading an enormous success would be a vast understatement!
THE RESISTANCE!
Only one event could possibly follow the NIGHT SKIES reading and that was returning “Yorkiethon” favorites THE RESISTANCE improv comedy troupe: Kurt Scholler (BIG BANG THEORY), Justin Michael Terry (STARGATE ORIGINS), Chris Mathieu (THE DEFENDERS OF STAN), Kurt Maloney (THE BIG WHAT IF), and Ryan Marsico (FROM JENNIFER). The group took story suggestions from the live audience before launching into a completely improvised feature length horror/comedy they called “Christmas Massacre.” For 3 years in a row THE RESISTANCE had brought the funny to “Yorkiethon” and kept the audience (and hosts) laughing and year 4 was no exception! As the clock struck midnight on Sunday morning, Spooky Dan (SLAY BELLES) pitted Green and Lynch against each other in a trivia contest that he made up especially for his segment of “Yorkiethon 4.” With categories like “Music Video Directors,” “Camera Gear,” and “Movie Crypt” the battle was vicious but in the end it was Lynch that won Spooky’s box of prizes. Next up was a live commentary for BLISS (2019) with writer/director Joe Begos (THE MIND’S EYE), producer/editor Josh Ethier (ALMOST HUMAN), and producer Matt Mercer who was back again after participating in the NIGHT SKIES reading just a few hours earlier. While the commentary was easily the most technically focused of the marathon with its discussions of camera gear, the color grading process, and Begos’ specific lens choices, it didn’t stop the group from sharing just as many laughs as the other commentaries featured this year. Any aspiring filmmakers listening to this one surely felt their heads exploding (pun intended) with terrific ideas and massive inspiration for the making of their next film. Following BLISS was Steve “Uncle Creepy” Barton (SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD) who surprised the hosts by casting them in a largely improvised version of his favorite holiday story- A CHRISTMAS CAROL. With Lynch’s alter ego “Abel Ferrara” holding down the pivotal role of “Scrooge” and Green and Barton doing all other parts, the three managed to massacre Charles Dickens’ beloved story before the audience’s ears and create a segment so ridiculously funny that it is sure to return in “Yorkiethon 5” with the desecration of a completely different classic tale! The biggest surprise of the weekend came not in the form of a special guest but as a surprise movie screening! In a “Yorkiethon” first, the hosts played the audience a film that they had never seen before and could not see anywhere else… Adam Green’s very first feature film and the film that would ultimately become the sit-com HOLLISTON… COFFEE & DONUTS (1999).
Made in 1998/1999 with a Beta camera, 3 lights, and a budget of only $400, the highly sought after indie film that launched Green’s career has never been distributed anywhere due to the massive amount of copyright infringements plaguing almost every single frame of the movie. As explained before the movie started, COFFEE & DONUTS was made as an experiment (to see if a decent feature film could be made on video) and as a calling card into Hollywood that could hopefully sell someone on financing a proper version of the film. Green and his life-long cinematic partner in crime cinematographer Will Barratt had shot the majority of the movie over the spring and summer of 1999 in secret overnight shoots while holding down full time day jobs at Time Warner Cable (where they “borrowed” the equipment from). There was not a single professional actor anywhere in the movie and the crew was comprised of Green, Barratt, and (if they were lucky enough) a friend or two that would volunteer to help out on whatever nights they could spare. C&D was edited tape to tape (meaning that once an edit was made, it could not be changed without either re-doing every subsequent edit in the movie all over again or having the quality of the footage go down two full generations) and with only two tracks of audio available. COFFEE & DONUTS would ultimately win best picture at The Smokey Mountain Film Festival – a small festival that just so happened to be the first festival coming up after C&D was finished. Green and Barratt were so naive and clueless that they didn’t even think of waiting and trying for Sundance, Toronto, or any “real” festival for that matter. Therefore, the accolade of being “the first feature film to be shot on video” would go to CHUCK & BUCK almost 2 years later. Nevertheless, COFFEE & DONUTS succeeded in getting Green signed to a major talent agency and introducing him to the industry. The concept would eventually be re-developed as a sit-com and though it immediately sold to Touchstone/UPN (with Tom Shadyac attached as the producer), mergers and other bad luck would continually hold up the project for almost 13 years. Finally… on April 3, 2012… COFFEE & DONUTS would have it’s world premiere on television under its new title… HOLLISTON. It is the ultimate example of not giving up and proof that where there is a will there is a way. The excitement amongst “Yorkiethon 4’s” audience was through the roof as until this moment (save for a surprise showing of C&D in 2010 following a screening of FROZEN at The New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles), the only way to see the movie was if you knew someone associated with it who was willing to show you their own VHS copy. The film couldn’t have possibly played better as those who were still awake at 4am PST were treated to something they never expected to happen.
Immediately following the screening of COFFEE & DONUTS, cinematographer Will Barratt (HATCHET) joined Green and Lynch for a 30 minute Q&A about the making of the film. As the sun began to rise (again) in Los Angeles, actor Shawn Ashmore (X-MEN) and film editor Ed Marx (HATCHET 2) joined Green, Lynch, and Barratt for a live commentary to their 2010 snowy thriller FROZEN. The non-stop facts and trivia about the making of the single location suspense thriller packed the 90 minutes with nearly a breath taken in between. Highlights included the story of Ashmore having to work with a vicious boarder collie named “Dart” after the dog that was originally supposed to work in the scene sadly and suddenly passed away just a few nights earlier… and the group hilariously lamenting over internet trolls trying to claim that they didn’t actually shoot the film practically, that the cast wasn’t really 50 feet in the air on the wide of a mountain, and that the actors weren’t really cold. Much like the commentary for WRONG TURN 2, the commentary for FROZEN benefited greatly from having a large group of cast/crew assembled before the microphones. Next up, “Yorkiethon” favorite Felissa Rose (SLEEPAWAY CAMP) joined the hosts to discuss the actresses latest projects and the upcoming second season of her CASUALTY FRIDAY podcast. It’s important to note that Rose has just flown back into Los Angeles a few hours earlier after wrapping production on a new film, yet there she was behind the microphones with Green and Lynch at 7:30am PST. Her cheerleading for what Green, Lynch, and Arwen accomplish with their annual “Yorkiethons” was just the boost that the hosts needed as they entered the final 10 hour home stretch for “Yorkiethon 4.” Musician Brendon McCreary (YOUNG BEAUTIFUL IN A HURRY) followed Rose and wow’d the hosts and audience by performing several original songs showcasing his incredible vocal range. The voice of “Freddy Mercury’s ghost” on Netflix’s animated series BIG MOUTH, McCreary was the perfect final musical guest for this year’s marathon. Next up were actors Eric Edelstein (TWIN PEAKS) and Jess Rona (NEW GIRL). They shared their story of Edelstein falling for Rona after seeing her in an improv show, resulting in the two becoming husband and wife. However, it was Rona’s story of how a side passion of hers (dog grooming) unexpectedly turned her into a social media influencer after posting adorable and hilarious videos of the dogs being groomed on Instagram. Rona was kind enough to offer Arwen some beauty tips and Edelstein entertained the hosts with his amazing David Lynch impersonation before the couple left.

Up next was a live commentary for FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI: JASON LIVES with the film’s writer/director Tom McLoughlin (AMAZING STORIES). With PART VI being one of Green and Lynch’s most favorite films in the FRIDAY THE 13TH franchise and a major influence on their own signature blends of horror/comedy, the hosts were bounding with excitement to interview McLoughlin about the film and praise the filmmaker up and down for resurrecting “Jason Voorhees” in such unforgettable style. It was only fitting that one of McLoughlin’s very best friends Mick Garris (THE STAND) followed him on the marathon! Joined by his producing partner in crime on the POST MORTEM podcast and on last year’s horror anthology film NIGHTMARE CINEMA Joe Russo (DARK, DEADLY & DREADFUL), Garris discussed the challenges of getting anthology films financed and distributed as well as the constantly changing landscape of the industry. Known as “the nicest guy in horror” (if not “in all of Hollywood!”) it should come as no surprise that Garris even made a cash donation to Save A Yorkie Rescue before leaving. Up next was the final film commentary of “Yorkiethon 4”, DODGEBALL – featuring actors Joel David Moore (AVATAR) and Chris Williams (CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM).

Together, Moore and Williams discussed the making of the sports comedy classic, from the unbelievable list of well known actors that Moore ultimately beat out for the role of “Owen”… to Williams being asked to read the role of “Dwight” at everyone else’s audition but never quite knowing if he actually had the role or not until the very end of casting… to the actual dodgeball training that the cast underwent… the stories never let up from start to finish! As Moore and Williams left, the final guests of “Yorkiethon 4” took their places behind the microphones.

Leonard Maltin (the most famous living critic and historian of cinema), his daughter Jessie Maltin (the MALTIN ON MOVIES podcast), and Leonard’s wife/Jessie’s mother Alice Maltin made the ending of “Yorkiethon 4” a true family affair. With a discussion that included everything from favorite films of the year/decade to the importance of rescuing animals, the Maltins closed out this year’s epic 48-hour live marathon with heart and class. As the Maltin’s exited and “Yorkiethon 4” hit its finish line, Green excitedly announced that the goal of $40,000.00 raised was indeed… REACHED! (Technically the total was $40,098.01 after late donations had finished coming in over the next day.) In fact, Green was so excited that he mistakenly spilled a full can of Coke all over the table just as he was calling the Rescue’s president Tiffany Renninger with the good news. Thankfully Green’s laptop and the podcasting gear survived the Coca Cola bath unscathed, but the last minute mishap was truly fitting given the many hurdles the team had endured behind the scenes in producing this year’s “Yorkiethon.”

It is a tradition to cast the joking and laughter aside in the final moments of each “Yorkiethon” and to focus on the gravity of what is actually at stake with THE MOVIE CRYPT’s annual charity event. As fun as each year’s show may be, we can’t forget WHY Green, Lynch, and Arwen actually do it and who they do it for. While the four “Yorkiethons” so far may have raised over $115,000.00 and while this year’s event may have been the most successful marathon yet… animal rescue cannot be something that is focused on merely one weekend of each year. For every dog that “Yorkiethon 4” may have helped save, there are still thousands of abandoned dogs and cats that will not live to see Christmas day. To drive home the severity of the situation and remind the audience of the tragic fate that they helped spare so many dogs from this year, “Yorkiethon 4” closed with Green reading a heart wrenching piece about euthanasia from an abandoned dog’s point of view.

Reflecting on the dozens of artists that had joined Green, Lynch, and Arwen on the air… the dozens and dozens who donated items to the silent auction… and the audience around the world that answered their call for help by generously donating to their cause… there was not a dry eye in the ArieScope studio as the team exhaustedly crossed the finish line of “Yorkiethon 4.”
A few weeks earlier, Green and Lynch had invited THE MOVIE CRYPT’s amazing community of Patreon supporters (whom without there would be no podcast and therefore no “Yorkiethons”) to send in the names and photos of the pets they would be donating on behalf of this year. “Yorkiethon 4” closed with a video tribute to those pets, some of whom were enjoying this year’s show right beside us while others were listening from the other side of the rainbow bridge where they are patiently waiting to see us again someday.
